Vivienne Westwood World’s End 1984 “WITCHES” collectionThe Face May 1987
While searching for a Bow Wow Wow support act in New York City Malcolm McLaren saw potential in hip hop. In 1981 Fab Five Freddy set up Afrika Bambaataa and Rock Steady as openers for Bow Wow Wow at The Ritz. By 1982 McLaren had released single “Buffalo Gals” with the World’s Famous Supreme Team, and followed up a year later with the album Duck Rock. Through New York City visits McLaren and Westwood became familiar with artist Keith Haring and collaborated with him for this 1983 “WITCHES” a/w collection. It featured Chico Marx pointed caps, Haring prints, and the iconic three-tongues trainers. This collection was the final partnership between Westwood and McLaren, and Haring would go on to voice feelings of being cheated by the pair.
